Front-End Web Developer (JS/AJAX) for 3D Social Network

Leap In Entertainment

Leap In Entertainment (www.justleapin.com) is seeking a talented, front-end web developer to join us in creating a 3D social networking application.
This isn’t just another collection of scripts that are loosely tied together by links and driven by a database. We’re building an integrated web and 3D application using AJAX techniques and licensed 2D and 3D technologies that will challenge most people’s notions of what a web service can and can not do.
Are you a skilled developer with a thirst for new challenges? Are you passionate about developing web services and applications? Do you value working as a respected part of a creative team? Do you take pride in your work, and do you like to feel a sense of ownership over your projects? Would you be interested in working collaboratively with a talented group of web application developers, game developers, user-interface specialists and 2D/3D artists? If this describes you, read on.
We don’t need someone who knows their way around Photoshop and Illustrator. We don’t want someone who builds HTML with Dreamweaver. Nor are we looking for an expert on Flash, or a backend developer who builds only data models and writes only business logic. While any of these skills may conceivably be valuable in this position, none of them alone will get you the job. If you are just a design-and-layout, or a databases-and-backend person, then this isn’t the job for you.
Have you ever built a dynamic user interface using JavaScript and HTML/CSS? We’re not asking if you can use Google to find a script to cut and paste. Can you write one yourself, from scratch? If we gave you a set of PNGs representing parts of an analog clock, could you give us back some well-written JavaScript that updated in real-time, and let the user set a new time by dragging the minute hand around in circles? Would it be a self-contained object that we could instantiate multiple times without having namespace conflicts? Would it be cross-browser compatible? Could it trigger callbacks when a new time is set? Could it generate an XML representation of its current state? Could it accept the same XML structure as input and update to a new state? If this is something you can do, especially if it’s comparable to the sorts of things you’ve already done, this might be the job for you. If you read this paragraph, and thought the clock sounded fun to write (excepting, perhaps, the cross-browser part), you’d be thrilled with the sorts of things we create.
Remember, you have to be able to build this all by yourself. You can’t just cut and paste the kind of code we need for our application.
Could any job post be complete without bullet points? We’re not sure, but here’s a few anyway:
Your skills include:
- JavaScript
- (X|[DX]?HT)ML
- CSS
- DOM
- AJAX
- JSON (and/or) XML knowledge
- a keen understanding of how page structure and additional resource references can influence load time
You get extra points for:
- Ruby on Rails
- Dojo Toolkit
- Other JS Libraries (YUI, JQuery, ExtJs, MooTools, Prototype, Scriptaculous)
- MySQL
- Understanding what sort of expression (X|[DX]?HT)ML is, and how to write one yourself
Your responsibilities may include:
- working with senior developers to design and implement new functionality
- taking ownership of significant portions of our JavaScript software architecture
- mentoring junior developers
- code review
- promoting and nurturing Agile software development processes
Are you the person we’re looking for? If you think so, send your resume along with a brief cover letter introducing yourself to hr@justleapin.com. Applications that include a commentary on JavaScript’s “this” keyword in haiku format will be marked for special consideration.
