As a Java Developer you will work on an exciting project to migrate our current legacy Perl code base over to a new Java based platform. The migration project is an exciting opportunity to build a strong and extensible foundation that will allow Gumtree to grow and develop its product into a user centered engaging experience. In addition to working on the migration project you will also get the opportunity to develop new product features that will be used by millions of people. The role requires a self-starter who is up for a challenge, enjoys working as part of a team and tries to make a positive difference with everything they get involved in. Your responsibilities include the following: • Work as part of the development team that will be responsible for delivering the migration. • Design and implement new web based products for Gumtree’s website. • Proactively push test coverage and test driven development. • Support and maintain future functionality. • Investigate new technologies and development methodologies and integrate them into the platform. The ideal candidate will have the following experience: • Degree educated in Computer Science or a related discipline. • 3-5 years of Java development experience in a web based environment. • 3-5 years of database development experience, ideally in MySQL. • Excellent knowledge of web and application frameworks such as Spring and Spring MVC. • Strong experience with open source technologies including web containers such as Tomcat and Apache. • Excellent agile development experience including automated testing, continuous integration and iterative development. • Experience of using a continuous integration server such as Cruise Control, Team City or Hudson. • Experience of using a source control repository such as SVN or Git. • Strong design pattern experience and some architectural experience. • End to end project lifecycle experience from systems design to application support. Experience in the following would be advantageous: • SOA development experience. • Development experience using web services. • Knowledge of front end technologies such as AJAX, JQuery and object oriented Java Script. • Experience of working on high traffic websites. • Perl development experience focusing on web based Perl development.
